The UNC School of Medicine announced a $50,000 donation to support research that may help determine the best time to inform parents about the value of vaccinating children.
Greg Lindberg, the Chairman and Founder of Eli Global, is providing the necessary resources to advance current knowledge on this critical issue.
“Investing in this important research at UNC School of Medicine is in keeping with Eli Global’s commitment to support initiatives that improve health and well-being across the age spectrum,” said Lindberg.
Every reputable health organization in the world supports childhood vaccines because the overwhelming scientific evidence demonstrates the enormous benefits of vaccines far outweigh the relatively small risks. Consequently, pediatricians typically discuss the benefits of childhood vaccines when a woman is pregnant or shortly after a child is born.
However, research conducted at UNC suggests people may actually develop opinions or reach conclusions on vaccines even before pregnancy. This suggests they may not have all the facts they need when they make a decision.
The gift from Mr. Lindberg will expand this research to a nationwide population. Pediatricians will have a much deeper understanding of how people make their decisions when they need the facts, and if there are other points to consider such as location, age, ethnicity, and so on.
“The decision to vaccinate your children may be the most important health decision a parent can make,” said Dr. Jacob Lohr, Professor of Pediatrics at UNC School of Medicine and leader of the study. “We are learning that timing plays a key role in this decision. So we are particularly grateful to Mr. Lindberg and Eli Global because this gift couldn’t come at a better time.”
